Modern Family is one of the most popular sitcoms on TV. The ABC show has been running since 2009, and ever since then, it has gone through an impressive nine seasons and 203 episodes, all with high ratings. Fans and critics alike could not get enough of the family dynamics between the Pritchetts, the Dunphys, and the Tuckers. The close bond of the cast on the show is evident, but in their private lives, their personalities and relationships are completely different. It is a testament to their acting skills that they can fool audiences into thinking that they are really like that. Many of them have grown up and had relationships during the show while some of the older cast members have been married to their spouses for decades. Check out the real-life partners of the Modern Family stars.
Gloria Pritchett – Sofia Vergara
Feisty and beautiful Gloria is the Colombian wife of Jay Pritchett. Gloria is considerably younger than Jay, but has him wrapped around her finger.
The mother to Manny and Joe often speaks about her humble beginnings in a poverty-stricken and crime-ridden small town in Colombia, and isn’t afraid to use violence as a solution, which has the rest of the family quite scared at times.
Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello
Although Jay and Gloria seem like the perfect couple in Modern Family, Sofia Vergara is happily married to American actor and producer Joe Manganiello.
The couple first got together in 2014 and were engaged after six months of dating and went onto tie the knot the following year in a ceremony in Palm Beach, Florida. Sofia has one son from a previous marriage. For six years running, Sofia Vergara has topped the highest paid actresses on TV list.
Jay Pritchett- Ed O’Neill
Jay Pritchett is the strong, stubborn and hard patriarch of his family. Jay is the father of Claire, Mitchell and Joe and is often seen seeking the approval and attention of Phil Dunphy.
Jay was previously married to ex-wife Dede but after their divorce and through the success in his business, he won the heart of his stunning wife, Gloria. Jay is often seen giving pep-talks to his step-son Manny and many of his grandchildren.
Ed O’Neill and Catherine Rusoff
Despite trading in his older wife for a much younger one on Modern Family, Ed O’Neill has been married to his with Catherine since 1986. The two met while filming the 80s family sitcom, Married…With Children and instantly knew they were perfect for one another.
The couple are still going strong today and they have two daughters together. It seems acting runs in the O’Neill family as Ed’s daughter Sophia has already ventured into the family business.
Claire Dunphy – Julie Bowen
Claire Dunphy is the strong-willed wife of Phil and daughter of Jay Pritchett. Claire is known as the strict parent to Haley, Alex, and Luke, but when it comes to giving them advice and defending them, she is always there.
That’s also why Mitch and Cam are often coming for parenting tips. Claire is considered somewhat of a daddy’s girl and even went to work for Jay at his closet company. Unlike Phil, Claire can be abrasive, controlling and arrogant, and even inherited Jay’s competitiveness.
Julie Bowen and Scott Phillips
In her personal life, Julie Bowen married real estate investor and software developer Scott Philips in 2004. The couple went on to have three sons together, first Oliver and then twins, John and Gustav.
In the pilot of Modern Family, Julie was heavily pregnant with the twins and the production had to strategically place her behind objects to cover her stomach. Sadly, in 2018, after 13 years of marriage, Julie filed for divorce and the couple decided to go their separate ways.
Mitchell Pritchett – Jesse Tyler Ferguson
Mitchell is the son of Jay and brother of Claire. Prior to coming out as gay three times to his father, Mitchell dated a number of girls but none of them ever worked out for obvious reasons.
Due to Jay’s aloofness during his childhood, Mitch struggled with showing affection, much to the dismay of husband Cam. The two were exact opposites of each other and Mitchell was the highly-strung lawyer. He and Cam share adopted daughter, Lily.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Justin Mikita
Jesse Tyler Ferguson is not that different to his character Mitchell Pritchett as he admitted he had to come out to his father three times at 17, 19 and 21. In 2012, Jesse became engaged to lawyer Justin Mikita after dating for almost two years.
In 2013, the couple were married in a ceremony in New York City, where some of his Modern Family co-stars were in attendance. In 2017, Ferguson announced that he and Mikita were ready to become fathers.
Phil Dunphy – Ty Burrell
Phil Dunphy is the doting husband of Claire and father to Haley, Alex and Luke, who he tries to act like a friend to. Phil considers himself a “cool dad” and when he is not selling houses as a realtor, he is often engaging in ridiculous activities with Luke, much to Claire’s dismay.
Phil is child-like, yet loving and kind-hearted but constantly tries to impress an intimidating Jay. Phil is often the person that everyone confides in as he is always open to listening.
Ty Burrell and Holly Burrell
Ty Burrell met his wife Holly at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington D.C, prior to moving to New York City and trying to embark on acting careers. The two were married in 2000 and have been together ever since.
When Ty’s career in acting took off, they relocated to Los Angeles and Holly went on to become a chef. In 2010, it was announced that the couple had adopted a baby girl, before adopting a second daughter two years later.
Haley Dunphy – Sarah Hyland
Haley is the eldest child of Claire and Phil, and was born before the two were married. Haley was always the pretty, ditzy and rebellious one who cared a lot about her appearance, rather than her studies.
She was popular in school and was in an on-and-off relationship with Dylan for years, which Phil supported but Claire didn’t. She finally fell in love with Andy who was a good influence on her, but their relationship was complicated as Andy was engaged.
Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams
Being a beautiful and successful young actress, Sarah Hyland has had a string of boyfriends, but her current partner is Bachelorette and Bachelor In Paradise star Wells Adams.
Sarah admitted the two started exchanging messages on social media, and she said “I thought he was funny, and he was a fan of [my] show.” After their first date, the two became inseparable and they are often seen posting loved up pictures on their social media.
Cameron Tucker – Eric Stonestreet
Cameron Tucker is the flamboyant, outgoing and bubbly husband of Mitchell and adopted father to Lily. Growing up on a farm in Missouri, Cam had a very different upbringing to Mitchell.
Cam often tries to get Mitchell to lighten up which often results in embarrassment, but Cam only does it in a loving way. He is extremely emotional when it comes to criticism and has an unlikely talent of being Fizbo the clown. He dedicates his life to Lily and is the hands-on parent.
Eric Stonestreet and Lindsay Schweitzer
Despite playing a gay character on Modern Family, Eric Stonestreet has quite the different personal life, even though he is very aware that everyone thinks he is openly gay. After being in a long-term relationship with Katherine Tokarz, in 2017, Eric admitted he had found love again.
His new lady was pediatric nurse Lindsay Schweitzer. He admitted, “She calms me — she calms my nerves. I’m a very high-strung person.” Eric chose to shun the high-profile Hollywood lifestyle and date someone normal and down to earth.
Alex Dunphy – Ariel Winter
Alex is the middle child of Phil and Claire and was the most intelligent of all three kids. She was always an overachiever and often demeaned the rest of the family with sarcastic comments or condescension.
Alex cared so much about her studies and school, leading Haley to regularly comment how she had no friends or boys going after her. She eventually found love with class competitor Sanjay but after getting into Caltech, she began a relationship with Ben, an underachieving 26-year-old.
Ariel Winter and Levi Maeden
Ariel Winter might play a grounded nerd on TV, but her real life is quite the contrary. 19-year-old Ariel has had a number of different boyfriends but in 2016, she began dating actor Levi Meaden, 30.
Ariel has had quite the turbulent personal life with her estranged mother, so it seems that Meaden has given her stability. On their one year anniversary, Winter gushed ” I’m the luckiest girl in the entire world.” She added that she is “the happiest I could’ve ever imagined.”
Sal – Elizabeth Banks
Sal is the bigoted and outrageous best friend of Cam and Mitchell. Sal is a big drinker and since they adopted Lily, Sal made her disdain of their daughter very apparent.
Sal’s dislike of Lily stemmed from the fact that Mitch and Cam practically tamed Sal, and she didn’t like competing for their attention. Sal eventually met a guy named Tony and they married after three months before divorcing shortly after. Later, Sal gave birth to a son named Sammy.
Elizabeth Banks and Max Handleman
Despite playing the role of a party girl on Modern Family, Elizabeth Banks is actually much more settled in real life. She met her sportswriter and producer husband Max Handleman on the first day of college back in 1992.
Prior to getting married in 2003, Banks studied with Rabbis and converted to Max’s religion, Judaism. In 2011, Elizabeth and Max welcomed their first child via surrogate, followed by their second the following year, also via surrogate.
Luke Dunphy – Nolan Gould
Luke was the youngest and only son of the Dunphy family. He is seen as the simple son who is often getting up to no good, and his innocence leads him into awkward situations having not understood the repercussions.
Many of Luke’s mannerisms come from father, Phil, including his lack of attention and ability to be distracted by almost anything. In his teenage years, Luke and Haley develop a closer relationship and Luke’s attention turns to girls.
Nolan Gould and Hannah Glasby
The majority of Modern Family fans will always think of Luke as the curly haired and mischievous kid, but in real life, he is all grown up. 18-year-old Nolan had grown up in front of our eyes and in 2017, he was spotted on a date with a blonde.
It was rumored that Nolan was dating Australian model Hannah Glasby after the two were seen out holding hands. Although neither of them have confirmed or denied the relationship, it looks pretty obvious.
Andy Bailey – Adam DeVine
Andy is the former nanny of Jay and Gloria’s son Joe. Andy became close with the family, developing a close bond with Phil in particular.
After having a love-hate relationship at first, Andy and Haley develop feelings for each other but their timing was off and Haley later turns him down. When Andy goes to propose to his girlfriend Beth, Haley is too late in stopping it but they later break up. Haley and Andy eventually fall in love and embark on a long-distance relationship.
Adam DeVine and Chloe Bridges
In 2015, Adam DeVine met actress Chloe Bridges on the set of their horror movie, where they both had supporting roles. Since then, the couple have been very much in love and have made multiple appearances supporting each other on red carpets.
In 2017, DeVine revealed that after whisking her away on a romantic European tour, Bridges expected a proposal from the actor but he said: “I haven’t thought about that.” He later admitted he will likely wait a little bit longer before popping the question.
Pepper Saltzman – Nathan Lane
Pepper is the eccentric, camp and snobby close friend of Mitchell and Cam. Pepper is an event planner with an eye for detail, along with his assistant, Ronaldo.
Pepper often makes remarks about the size and decor of the couples’ house and has no filter when it comes to speaking about what is on his mind. Pepper eventually realizes that Ronaldo is in love with him, but due to his control freak nature, Pepper still can’t control the way he speaks to him.
Nathan Lane and Devlin Elliott
Nathan Lane is a very respected actor in acting and has won himself a Tony Award. However, he admitted that when he came out to his mother, she was appalled and said: “I would rather you were dead.”
Nonetheless, Lane went on to find love with theater producer and writer Devlin Elliott. After 18-years of dating, Lane and Elliott tied the knot at New York City’s City Hall in 2015. Lane has been heavily involved in advocacy work for the LGBT community.
DeDe Pritchett – Shelley Long
Delia “DeDe” Pritchett is the ex-wife of Jay and mother to Claire and Mitchell. DeDe is portrayed to be mentally ill, manipulative, inappropriate and aggressive, especially towards Gloria.
Although DeDe and Mitchell have a close relationship and she was open to him coming out as gay, her relationship with Claire is quite different. DeDe is very critical of Claire, which is used to Haley’s advantage as she helps her to get back at her mom. She has a special relationship with Manny also.
Shelley Long and Bruce Tyson
Shelley plays the ex-wife in Modern Family, and it turns out that it is a role that she is quite used to. Shelley was first married to Ken Solomon, but their brief union ended in divorce. Long later met Bruce Tyson on a blind date in 1979.

Javier Delgado – Benjamin Bratt
Javier Delgado is the ex-husband of Gloria and biological father to Manny. Gloria stated that due to Javier being Colombian, he was passionate, romantic and persuasive, some of the traits that Manny inherited.
Nonetheless, Gloria said that in her relationship with Delgado, all they did was”fight and make love.” Javier is constantly traveling and is said to have many important connections, which is why he doesn’t see Manny so much. Jay calls out Javier on being an absent father, despite Manny admiring his father.
Benjamin Bratt and Talisa Soto
Bratt might play the Colombian bad boy ex-husband on Modern Family, but he is actually an American actor and dated A-list actress, Julia Roberts in 1998 but the couple split months later.

In 2002, Bratt the actress fell pregnant before the two were married that same year. Their first daughter was born in 2002, followed by their son in 2005.
Ben – Joe Mande
Ben is one of the workers at Jay’s company Pritchett’s Closets & Blinds. Despite looking up to Jay, neither him or Claire seem to think very highly of Ben, who still lives with his mother at the age of 26, leading Ben to be labeled an “underachieving man-child.”
Nonetheless, Ben took a liking to Alex and ended up sending her flowers as her secret admirer. The two began dating after Alex discovered his identity, but Alex often bossed Ben around.
Joe Mande and Kylie Augustine
Stand up comedian, Joe Mande, is far from the under-achiever in real life, appearing on sitcoms and writing for shows including the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation, Comedy Central sketch series Kroll Show, and the Adult Swim series Delocated.
