Whether you want to stalk your crush or know if your friend is ignoring you, this is a great new feature. But for some, having others know your activity is not ideal. Instagram has launched a new feature that allows your followers to see when you are online. Now, a green dot will appear next to yours and other users' account names in the Direct inbox and your follower list when you share a post from the feed.

From Instagram's point of view, the idea is that they are trying to make it easier to connect with people and get you talking more with those you are already connected to. "Today we’re making it easier to connect with friends on Instagram by showing you when they’re available to chat," Instagram wrote in a blog post. "DMing friends and connecting over the content you love is more fun when you know your friends are there to see it."

The dot will show up in the direct messaging part of the app but also on your friends list when you share a post with someone. Luckily, for those with privacy issues, you can disable the feature in the “Activity Status” part of the app’s Settings menu, where, by default, everyone's is "on".

For those thinking this is not a new feature, yes, Instagram already displayed how long ago someone was active by including “Active 23m ago” or “Active Now” next to their account info. The subtle way these social media experts rollout these features is usually so unnoticeable that it can get us into trouble!

Despite launching the 'All Caught Up' feature that lets users know when they've reached the end of all the new posts on their feed, they are still not curbing the time spent daily on the app. It is believed that letting other users know when you're online may encourage people to use the app even more obsessively.
