If you’re sick of the same boring gym routine, and if you’re willing to spend about $3,000 on a home workout system, the Tonal product might be what you’ve been searching for. In short, Tonal is a strength-training system which uses electromagnetism resistance and machine learning to create a personalized full-body home workout program.

If you think the Tonal is just like every other gimmicky home gym on the market, you’re wrong. There are several key differences. For starters, instead of actual weights, Tonal uses electromagnetism to simulate and control weight.

If you’re performing a bicep curl, for example, “the thing pulling back on you isn’t gravity — it’s an electromagnetic field controlled by a computer algorithm,” explains Aly Orady, Tonal CEO and founder. “It’s digitally controlled weight.”

The other big difference is that Tonal comes with a built-in personal trainer. For $49 a month users can receive personalized training sessions, recommended programs, and structured workout sessions.

“It’s like having an entire gym and a personal trainer in your home,” Orady explained. “That’s a pretty big claim, but I’m going to show it to you and you’re going to love it.”

Before Tonal designs your personalized program, the systems runs you through a baseline 10-minute strength test to determine your starting point. Based on this test, Tonal gives you scores for core, upper body, and lower body. At this point, you begin your program.

Through each workout, Tonal monitors your level of fatigue by keeping track of rep quality. When the system detects that you are not maintaining proper form, the resistance level is automatically lowered.

The Tonal system, which mounts to your wall like a television, is certainly pretty pricey, listed at $2,995. But from everything we could see, this unique high tech home gym is well worth the money.
