They have just celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary and, while in the midst of several divorce rumors, David and Victoria Beckham have continued to prove they are stronger than ever. The parents of four have been showing they are still are very much a couple through their social media pages, so what is it that keeps that marriage alive after all these years?
It Was The Wedding Of ’99
Dubbed Posh and Becks, David and Victoria married at Ireland’s Luttrellstown Castle on July 4, 1999, four months after welcoming their first child, Brooklyn.
Love At First Sight
Before David Beckham became a household name for his talent on the soccer pitch, Victoria became an overnight sensation with her Spice Girl bandmates and their 1996 single, “Wannabee.” Having seen the video for the hit single, David had turned to his Manchester United teammate Gary Neville and proclaimed, “That one there, that’s the girl I’m going to marry.” Fortunately, the Spice Girls had visited a few of Beckham’s soccer games, so David and Victoria were able to meet after the match one day.
In 2016, Victoria wrote a letter to her 18-year-old self for British Vogue. In the letter, she recalled the first moment she met her husband. “While the other football players stand at the bar drinking with their mates, you will see David standing aside with his family. (He’s not even in the first team at this stage—you are the famous one.) And he has such a cute smile.” Of course, at the time, Victoria was a superstar, and David was yet to become a global phenomenon.
Making Sure To Keep Her Number
While David claimed he was going to marry Victoria the moment he laid eyes on her in the music video, Victoria felt the same that day in the Manchester United players’ lounge in 1991. In her letter for British Vogue, Victoria stated, “You, too, are close to your family, and you will think how similar he feels to you. He’s going to ask for your number. (He still has the London-to-Manchester plane ticket on which you wrote it.)” That’s right, Becks kept it after all these years.
Their Paths Alligned
The couple did not wait long before that first date, with David driving down to London that very night to see her. The soon-to-be couple then realized that they had actually grown up just 15 minutes away from one another; they both came from working-class families, and they both dreamed of becoming stars one day. That dream happened to become a reality for both of them, but little did they know the impact they would have on the world as a couple.
Time To Make It Official
After a year of meeting one another and dating, the couple announced their engagement on January 25, 1998. With so much attention on their romance, the couple even announced their plans to marry at a press conference near Crewe, and Victoria was sure to show off her new engagement ring. The news of their engagement spread like wildfire, and the world waited for the big day to watch the Spice Girl and her soccer player star become Mr. and Mrs. Beckham.
The Big Day
It was reported that their big wedding cost the famous couple an impressive $80,000, with 230 people flying to Dublin to watch them exchange their vows. Victoria’s fellow bandmates were in attendance, as well as David’s Manchester United teammates and Elton John. In fact, the Candle in the Wind star was meant to perform but suffered a heart attack before the wedding, which prevented him from doing so. As for their wedding gifts, the newlyweds did not have a wedding registry but asked for shopping vouchers.
The Couple That Dresses Together, Stay Together
It seems the couple shared a similar taste when they got married and wore not one, but two, matching outfits. Channeling Prince Charming in an ivory suit, Victoria was his perfect Princess in a satin Vera Wang gown. Following the ceremony, the newlyweds, along with their young son, changed into purple ensembles.”‘What was I thinking?’ I look like the guys out of Dumb & Dumber when they went to that party and wore those ridiculous outfits,” David told Vanity Fair about his wedding outfit choice in 2017.
A Home Fit For Royalty
The year 1999 proved to be a big one for the famous couple. Not only did they officially become husband and wife, but they also welcomed their first son, and purchased a new home. This was not any home, however, this was what soon became known as Beckingham Palace. The stunning seven-bedroom property in Hertfordshire became home to David, Victoria, and three of their four children. What’s more, is that the “palace” even has a children’s home, nicknamed mini-Beckingham Palace, on the grounds.
The Biggest Celebrities Of The Moment
It was only fitting that the couple had a home that made them sound like royals because they were evidently being treated similarly to royals. The world wanted a glimpse of the newly married couple, and they soon became the most photographed celebrity couple and were featured in every major gossip magazine. These photos proved that the matching outfits did not start and end at their wedding, but Posh and Becks would continue to hit the headlines in their matching ensembles.
An Eye For Fashion
Before becoming a popular fashion designer with her own fashion line and making wedding dresses for the likes of Eva Longoria, Victoria Beckham had her own style. Of course, her husband followed suit and, perhaps the most memorable outfit of Victoria’s was this white Dolce & Gabbana lace-up dress. The Spice Girls singer wore this on the red carpet of the 2003 MTV Movie Awards, with her husband walking beside her in a matching white suit.
To Spain They Go!
2003 was the year in which the Beckham’s relocated to Spain after David was signed to move from Manchester United to Real Madrid. The family had expanded a year prior, with the couple welcoming their second child, Romeo, on September 1, 2002. The family of four had it all at this point – a happy marriage, two beautiful kids, a new home in Spain, and a blossoming professional career for David, who had the privilege of playing for such a well-respected team.
Not All Plain Sailing
It is hard for many celebrities to be in the public eye, especially when you’re in such a high-profile relationship such as David and Victoria’s. The media followed their every move and the world wanted to know everything about them. Moreover, just like many other celebrity couples, David and Victoria were no different when it came to a cheating scandal. In 2004, rumors began to swirl that David Beckham was involved in an extramarital affair with their personal assistant, Rebecca Loos.
Nothing Will Stop Them
While the world waited to see the outcome of such media rumors, David and Victoria were quick to prove they were not going to let it affect them. In fact, that same month they were photographed leaving Claridge’s Hotel in London looking very loved-up. This was enough proof that they were still together, but they proved that the rumors were not going to get in their way once more the following year. On February 20, 2005, the couple welcomed their third child, a son named Cruz.
Giving Away A Little Too Much
We all know Victoria Beckham became a highly credited fashion designer, with many girls wishing to wear her clothes. However, someone who really enjoyed wearing Victoria’s clothes was her own husband. It became worldwide news when it was revealed that David liked to borrow his wife’s underwear. In fact, it was Victoria herself who let this fact slip during an interview on The Big Breakfast in 2000. While David later revealed its something they laugh about, he also said it’s all true.
Oops! She Did It Again
In fact, Victoria often got herself in trouble after appearing on interviews, perhaps giving away more than her husband had hoped when it came to their personal lives. The most memorable moment from an interview with David and Victoria Beckham, was when they appeared on Parkinson in 2008. Mrs. Beckham revealed “I call him Golden Balls now” following his England’s 1998 World Cup game against Argentina. “That’s one of those things I shouldn’t have said,” she said immediately afterward, with David hiding his hands in shame.
Finding The American Dream
Even with all the slip-ups and some more of Victoria’s outrageous comments to reporters, the couple continued to prove that nothing was going to come in between their marriage and love for one another. In 2007, the family once again moved for David’s career and, this time, they took their brood across the pond to live in LA. David was set to play for LA Galaxy, and the couple had no problem in fitting in with some of Hollywood’s most famous couples.
Play Hard, Work Harder
David and Victoria Beckham had made their fair share of headlines for their outfit choices since becoming husband and wife, so it is no surprise they would eventually release their own collections. It started with the couple launching their own Signature Fragrance Collection at Macy’s in New York in September 2008. This was followed by successful collections of dVb denim and sunglasses and, the couple becoming the new faces of Emporio Armani underwear. Moreover, Victoria Beckham’s first ready-to-wear collection was eventually showcased at New York Fashion Week in September 2008.
Expanding Their Family
After the release of a successful fashion line and David Beckham being honored with the Lifetime Achievement award as Sports Personality of the Year in 2010, the couple decided it was time to expand their family once again. Victoria was seen to be heavily pregnant when attending the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton and, three months later, she welcomed their fourth child. On July 10, 2011, Harper Seven Beckham was born, making it the couple’s first daughter.
A Slight Hiccup
The couple actually had trouble getting pregnant, but amazingly were able to have four children. It is known that Victoria struggles with a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome, which can often affect fertility. The former Spice Girl, however, managed to overcome the issues with the condition on four occasions. In fact, her first child came as quite the surprise and resulted in the couple pushing their wedding date back after finding out Victoria was pregnant.
They Didn’t Give Their Children Everything
All four of the Beckham children grew up in front of the cameras; after all, they were David and Victoria Beckham’s offspring. However, while three out of their four children grew up in one of the biggest houses in Britain, their famous parents made sure to teach their kids about a good work ethic. Before showing an interest in photography, Brooklyn was given a job in a local cafe when he was a young teen and was also a part of the Arsenal U16 team.
Supporting One Another
Just as Victoria always played the doting wife, standing by his side during rumors of an affair, and moving her whole family abroad for his career, David proved to be just as supportive over the years. In December 2014, Victoria won Brand of the Year at the British Fashion Awards, and David was pictured on the red carpet right by her side. Moreover, David is often seen sitting front row to all her major fashion shows, bringing along some of their children each time.
Marriage Is For Life, But So Are Tattoos
While David Beckham is known for his talented skills on the soccer pitch, he somehow manages also to make headlines whenever he gets a new tattoo. His tattoo collection is so big now that it is hard to keep up with which ones he has gotten. However, when Victoria first met David, she told him to stop getting them. That idea seemed to go in one ear and out the other, but he did get one of Victoria’s name in Hindi. Unfortunately, however, it was spelled wrong.
Commemorating Special Days
The couple may remain relatively private when it comes to their personal lives, but they are sure to let their fans into some of their ongoings through their social media. In fact, both David and Victoria have posted sweet images of one another to their Instagram post, alongside a gushing caption. The couple has often shared never-before-seen photos with their followers when celebrating their anniversary, which also reminds everyone of how in love they are with one another. So is there any truth to the rumors?
Rumors Take Two
In January 2017, David revealed that the couple had renewed their vows in a secret ceremony. Speaking to Desert Island Discs, the talented sportsman said, “It was a lot more private, about six people there in our house.” That same year, Victoria uploaded a post marking her 18th wedding anniversary with the caption “I love you,” and a photo of their wedding. However, this was not enough to stop the rumors that were about to swirl once again.
Heading For Divorce?
In 2018, just a couple of months before David and Victoria would celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary, the rumor mill went into overdrive once again, suggesting their relationship was on the rocks. In fact, the media announced the couple was on the brink of divorce and fans believed the rumor to be true. These allegations began after the couple attended the Royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19th, and seemed not to look their happiest when photographed.
Denying False Reports
The rumors were heightened even further when the Daily Mail had reported that the former Manchester United player had left his longtime manager for a team led by his friend David Gardner. The reason this caused more speculation into the status of David and Victoria’s marriage was that David’s manager was also Victoria’s, leading people to believe he wanted to cut all ties. Meanwhile, the couple who kept tightlipped on whether the divorce rumors were true or false, did quickly deny this report.
Enough Is Enough
While David and Victoria never personally denied the reports, their management was sure to hit back at the claims. A spokeswoman for the famous couple stated that “there is no statement due or divorce. This is just fake social media news. This is all very bizarre and an embarrassing waste of time.” Meanwhile, Victoria continued to upload posts to her social media, with one of the fashion designers hugging Harper and tagging David Beckham with the caption “We love and miss u.”
Victoria Speaks Out
While marriages may have their ups and downs, Victoria finally addressed the rumors. “I try really, really hard. I try hardest to be the best mother,” she said in her speech at the Forbes Women Summit in June 2018. “I am trying to be the best wife and the best professional. When I get home, I try to put the phone down and spend time with the children and spend time with David. I have the support of an incredible husband.”
No Marriage Split Here
Amidst all the drama and fake news, Victoria and David Beckham eventually celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary on July 4, looking as loved-up as they always have. Before anyone could have any doubt about their relationship, the Instagram post by Victoria commemorating the occasion was captioned, “19 years!!! X I love u so much x.” The couple has since been uploading photos of one another with their children and while on vacation. For any fans worried that the divorce rumors were true, the Beckhams have proven them wrong once again.
